The guitar, with its characteristic Florentine cutaway to the upper bout, originally appeared in 1949 with one P90 pick up and was priced at $175 hence the name. A two pick up model was introduced in 1953 and humbucking pick ups (designed to lessen feedback) were fitted from
February 1957. It was the first guitar shipped by Gibson to use humbuckers and was much in demand by Jazz musicians around the world, who appre- ciated its distinctive tone and playability.
